The Start...

This is Niall Percy...

I'll be filming a two minute opening to a film for my AS Media Studies Production and I'll be working solo. I will be composing my own original soundtrack to my opening as composition for film & TV is what I plan to study at University and to work in eventually.

My inspiration so far for this two minute opening are comedic films or in fact any film which starts basically with the lead characters every day life being shown to the audience with a voice over of either a different character in the film or more commonly a narrator. My favourite example of this style is a 2006 film called, "Stranger Than Fiction" a comedy-drama film directed by Marc Foster. Which starts with the everyday life of Harold Crick, with a female narrator voicing over explaining how this man lives his life as if she is reading from a book.

From 0:18 -3:04 is the main opening sequence as at this point as the narrator finishes talking, however I think the sequence lasts until 3:28 as this is when the music drops out and the story really begins to start...

If not showing the average everyday life of this particular character it shows a back story of this character either by telling us facts about the character and showing short clips for each of these facts maybe flashing back to these events all the while showing the character as they are now before the main storyline starts if they themselves are narrating it. Such as in the 2007 action-comedy film called "Hot Fuzz" directed by Edgar Wright. Starring Simon Pegg As the main character who tells us all the facts about himself, his life and career in a blunt military style voice and manner. No embed code is available for this clip so here is a link to it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTHPiZHOYKY. I believe the opening starts at 0:33 and finishes at around 2:20.

Another opening scene I looked at is the 2005 film, "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" which after a opening credit sequence. Starts once again with the narrator (which is actually an item in the film itself) introduces the main character Arthur Dent, identifies the first event that occurs in the film then leaves the next minute or two to just on-screen actors attempting to solve this problem.
